AI Raises Output but Profit Gains Remain Elusive for Most Companies

New survey data from McKinsey and Deloitte paints a mixed picture of artificial intelligence in the workplace. While employees using AI tools report clear gains in personal productivity, only a small share of companies say those gains have translated into measurable profit growth.

The 2026 figures show that individual workers complete routine tasks faster, draft documents in less time, and spend fewer hours on repetitive analysis. Yet at the organizational level, the story changes. Few firms report meaningful improvement in earnings before interest and taxes, or EBIT, tied directly to AI adoption.

Analysts point to several reasons. Many companies have bolted AI onto existing workflows without redesigning the underlying processes. Others lack clear metrics to track where the time savings actually go. In some cases, freed-up hours are simply absorbed into meetings or lower-value work rather than redirected toward revenue-generating activity.

The surveys also suggest that deep process redesign remains rare. Firms that do restructure teams, decision rights, and handoffs around AI capabilities are more likely to see financial results. Those that treat AI as a faster way to do the same old work often stall at the pilot stage.

The takeaway for leaders is straightforward. Productivity at the desk does not automatically become profit on the books. Capturing real value requires rethinking how work flows through the organization, not just handing out new tools.
