Carnival Pride Pilots New Hull Cleaning Technology to Support More Sustainable Ship Operations

Carnival Cruise Line has teamed up with Jotun, a major name in marine coatings, to test a new robotic hull cleaning technology on the Carnival Pride. The goal is to keep the ship's underwater surface smooth and free of marine growth, which can slow the vessel down and increase fuel use. This trial is part of a broader push by the cruise line to cut emissions and improve overall efficiency without waiting for a full dry dock.

The system works while the ship is in port, using remotely operated equipment to scrub the hull gently but thoroughly. Unlike traditional cleaning methods that often require the ship to be taken out of service, this approach allows for more frequent maintenance with less disruption. Carnival says the partnership is about more than just saving fuel. A cleaner hull also reduces drag, which means lower carbon dioxide output per passenger mile. Early data from the Pride's runs in the Caribbean and the Bahamas will help the company decide whether to roll out the technology across its entire fleet.

Jotun's representatives note that the coating itself is designed to work in tandem with the cleaning robot, creating a system that adapts to different water temperatures and biofouling levels. Carnival's vice president of technical operations called the trial a practical step toward smarter shipkeeping, adding that the company is always looking for ways to balance guest comfort with environmental responsibility. The Pride will continue its regular schedule while the test data is collected over the coming months. If successful, the program could become a standard part of Carnival's maintenance routine, potentially extending the time between costly dry dock visits.
