Educators May Be Mistaking Tech Engagement for Real Student Engagement

A growing body of reporting suggests that schools are having trouble telling the difference between students who are engaged with technology and students who are actually engaged in learning. An NBC News investigation into the growing reliance on YouTube in classrooms points to deeper tensions over what engagement really means in education.

The reports raise a question that goes beyond any single platform: who does classroom technology actually serve? Is it the technology providers, or is it the students? According to the NBC report, parents argue that platforms such as YouTube are built to hold attention rather than to teach, and they worry that screen time is being counted as learning time without much evidence to back it up.

Educators quoted in the coverage describe a similar confusion. A student who is quiet and focused on a tablet can look engaged while absorbing very little. A student who is restless and asking questions can look disengaged while learning the most. When engagement gets measured by clicks, watch time, or completed assignments on a device, those distinctions disappear.

The concern is not that technology has no place in schools. The concern is that engagement has become a fuzzy word that lets districts point to device usage as proof of progress. Parents and researchers alike are calling for clearer definitions and better evidence, arguing that real engagement shows up in what students can do, explain, and apply, not in how long they stay on a screen.
