EMRTAI Picks Five Tech Firms for Critical Minerals Recovery Trials

COLUMBUS, Ohio, August 19, 2026 - The Environmental Monitoring and Remediation Technology Assessment Initiative, known as EMRTAI, has chosen five technology developers from its latest application pool to evaluate methods for extracting critical minerals from mining waste. The selected companies are Infinite Elements, AlkaLi Labs, Advanced Environmental Technologies, Transition Metal Solutions, and Stalagmite.

This third round of selections focuses on technologies that can either characterize the mineral content of waste streams or recover valuable materials like lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements from tailings and processing leftovers. The goal is to turn what is currently an environmental liability into a domestic source of supply for materials essential to batteries, electronics, and defense applications.

Each developer will now move into a structured assessment phase where EMRTAI will test their claims under real-world conditions. The initiative provides standardized ore samples, access to partner facilities, and a neutral evaluation framework. That means the results should show which technologies actually work at scale, not just in the lab.

The program has drawn growing interest since its first two rounds, with applicants ranging from university spin-offs to established engineering firms. EMRTAI officials say the variety of approaches in this batch is encouraging, from electrochemical separation methods to novel leaching agents and sensor-based sorting systems.

A public report on the performance of these five technologies is expected within twelve months. If any of them prove viable, the next step would be pilot projects with commercial mining partners. For now, the selected developers are gearing up for what one called a rigorous and transparent trial period.
