A dedicated teacher from Eugene has been named the state's TechStart K-8 Technology Teacher of the Year, earning widespread recognition for her innovative work in a unified STEM classroom at Cal Young Middle School. The award, which highlights excellence in integrating technology into elementary and middle school education, celebrates educators who inspire students to explore science, technology, engineering, and math through hands-on, inclusive learning.
The recipient, whose classroom brings together students of diverse abilities and backgrounds, has transformed the traditional STEM curriculum into a collaborative environment where every child can succeed. In her unified class, students with and without disabilities work side by side on projects that range from coding simple robots to designing sustainable city models using 3D printing software. Colleagues praise her for breaking down barriers and fostering a culture of curiosity and mutual respect.
"Technology isn't just about screens and gadgets; it's a tool for problem-solving and connection," the teacher said in a statement. "Seeing a student who once struggled to engage light up when they debug their first line of code—that's why I do this."
The award, presented by TechStart, a nonprofit focused on expanding technology education in Oregon, includes a grant for classroom resources. School administrators noted that the recognition underscores the importance of inclusive STEM programs, which prepare students for a rapidly evolving digital world while teaching empathy and teamwork. The teacher's approach has already inspired similar initiatives in other district schools, with plans to expand the unified model to additional grade levels next year.
