Google targets AI startup Mechanize's technology and talent in proposed $1.5B deal

Google has entered advanced discussions to acquire Mechanize, a private artificial intelligence startup, in a deal valued at roughly $1.5 billion. The proposed acquisition is less about the company's current revenue and more about securing its specialized technology and, critically, its engineering team. People familiar with the matter say the talks are ongoing and could still fall apart, but the structure of the deal points to a familiar pattern in Big Tech's race for AI dominance.

Mechanize, which has operated quietly since its founding, focuses on building lightweight AI models that run efficiently on consumer devices rather than relying on massive cloud data centers. That approach has drawn interest from Google, which has been pushing to integrate more on-device AI into its Pixel phones and Chrome browser. The startup's team, reportedly fewer than 30 people, includes several researchers who previously worked at major labs and have published work on model compression and real-time inference.

The proposed price tag, while steep for a company with little public traction, reflects the intense competition for AI expertise. Google has already made similar moves this year, absorbing small teams from other startups. If the deal closes, Mechanize's technology would likely be folded into Google's existing AI infrastructure, while its staff would join the company's DeepMind division. Neither Google nor Mechanize has issued a formal statement, and the deal is still subject to regulatory review.
