Huntington Beach teenager hopes to make technology less daunting for seniors

A Huntington Beach teenager is working to bridge the digital divide for older adults by offering free, one-on-one tech support. Phoebe Jin-Ngo, a local high school student, founded the nonprofit organization TechIQ for Seniors to help senior citizens navigate the often confusing world of smartphones, tablets, and computers.

The idea took root when Jin-Ngo noticed her own grandparents struggling with basic functions on their devices. They were not alone. Many seniors feel left behind by rapid technological changes, often finding standard manuals and online tutorials too complex or impersonal. Jin-Ngo saw an opportunity to make a difference.

TechIQ for Seniors provides personalized education tailored to each individual's needs. Instead of a generic class, volunteers work directly with seniors to teach specific skills, such as how to video call a grandchild, manage online banking, or safely use email. The goal is to build confidence and reduce the anxiety that often comes with new technology.

Jin-Ngo believes that technology should be a tool for connection, not a source of frustration. By offering patient, step-by-step guidance, her nonprofit helps seniors stay connected with family, access important services, and engage with the modern world. The program has already seen positive feedback from participants who report feeling more empowered and less isolated. For Jin-Ngo, the success is measured not just in skills learned, but in the smiles and renewed independence of the seniors she serves.
