Jensen Huang Says Nvidia Was Built on the Wrong Technology. His Next Move Changed Everything

Jensen Huang, the co-founder and CEO of Nvidia, recently made a striking admission about the company's early days. He revealed that the technology Nvidia was originally built on was fundamentally flawed. In the mid-1990s, the company focused on a graphics chip architecture that Huang now calls "the wrong technology." This approach, known as forward texture mapping, was complex and inefficient. It struggled to keep up with the demands of the emerging 3D gaming market. Competitors like 3dfx and ATI were pulling ahead with simpler, faster designs. By 1996, Nvidia was running out of money and facing a dead end.

Huang made a difficult decision. He went back to the drawing board and scrapped the company's core approach. He bet everything on a new method called inverse texture mapping. This technology was more efficient and handled 3D graphics in a way that matched how the human eye sees the world. The result was the Riva 128 chip, launched in 1997. It was a massive success and saved the company from collapse. That pivot laid the foundation for the GeForce line of graphics cards, which eventually dominated the PC gaming industry. More importantly, it gave Nvidia the technical expertise to later pivot again into artificial intelligence and data center computing. Today, Nvidia is one of the most valuable companies in the world, but it almost ended before it truly began. Huang's willingness to admit a major mistake and start over is a key reason the company survived and eventually thrived.
