Mistral has secured a major financial boost, announcing today that it closed a Series D round of 3 billion euros. The investment brings the company's post-money valuation to over 21 billion euros, marking one of the largest funding events in the European AI sector to date.
The company, known for its open-weight large language models, says the new capital will be used to accelerate research and expand its compute infrastructure. In a statement, Mistral framed the round as a step toward making sovereign, open-weight AI the defining technology frontier, rather than a closed, proprietary alternative.
This funding arrives at a time when European regulators and governments are pushing for more homegrown AI capabilities that do not rely on US-based cloud providers. Mistral has positioned itself as a key player in that effort, offering models that can be self-hosted and customized by enterprises and public institutions.
The round was led by existing investors, with participation from new backers, though the company did not disclose a full list of participants. Mistral said the funds will also go toward international expansion and building out its developer ecosystem.
The announcement signals growing investor confidence in the open-weight approach, even as larger rivals continue to pour billions into closed frontier models. Mistral's leadership has repeatedly argued that transparency and control over model weights are essential for long-term trust and safety in AI deployment.
With this new war chest, the company is expected to ramp up training runs for its next generation of models and potentially explore partnerships with European cloud providers to ensure data residency and regulatory compliance. The valuation jump, from roughly 6 billion euros in its previous round, reflects a rapidly heating market for AI infrastructure and talent.
