Morocco is advancing a plan to manufacture weapons systems based on Israeli technology inside its own territory, a shift that could reshape its defense industry and open export channels to international markets.
The move builds on years of growing military cooperation between Rabat and Israeli defense firms. Instead of simply purchasing finished products, Morocco now aims to produce components and complete systems locally. This approach would reduce dependence on foreign suppliers and create jobs in a sector that has historically relied on imports.
Several Israeli defense companies have reportedly shown interest in setting up joint ventures with Moroccan partners. The focus areas include drones, loitering munitions, and electronic warfare systems. These categories match Morocco's operational needs and its ambition to become a regional arms producer.
For Algeria, the development raises concerns. Algiers has long viewed Morocco's military modernization with suspicion, and the prospect of Moroccan-made Israeli-designed weapons adds a new dimension to the rivalry. Algeria maintains its own defense ties with Russia and China, but Morocco's access to advanced Israeli technology gives Rabat an edge in certain niche capabilities.
Potential exports to NATO markets remain a longer-term goal. Moroccan officials have not confirmed specific deals, but industry analysts suggest that cost advantages and proven combat performance could make Moroccan-produced systems attractive to some European buyers. Whether that materializes depends on licensing agreements, production capacity, and political considerations within the alliance.
For now, the emphasis is on building infrastructure and training personnel. The shift from buyer to producer would mark a significant step for Morocco's defense sector.
