Novel artificial intelligence technology improves eye disease diagnosis

Novel artificial intelligence technology improves eye disease diagnosis

A new artificial intelligence system is changing how doctors detect and monitor eye diseases, using non-invasive scans that provide a detailed, three-dimensional view beneath the surface of the eye. The technology allows clinicians to examine tissue layers without causing any discomfort or pain to the patient, replacing older methods that often required more invasive procedures.

The AI analyzes high-resolution images from optical coherence tomography, a common imaging technique, and identifies subtle patterns that might escape the human eye. This helps catch conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy at earlier stages, when treatment is more effective. Researchers say the system can flag abnormalities in seconds, reducing the time needed for manual review and cutting down on misdiagnosis.

Early trials show the AI matches or exceeds the accuracy of experienced specialists, particularly in detecting early signs of disease that are easy to overlook. The developers hope the tool will be especially useful in rural or underserved areas where access to eye specialists is limited. By automating part of the diagnostic process, the technology could help more patients receive timely care and prevent vision loss. The system is still undergoing regulatory review, but clinics in several countries have already begun pilot testing.
