The National Science Foundation is committing $90 million to stand up three new technology centers, with a significant chunk of that money going toward a major robotics initiative. The new funding round targets research areas the agency sees as critical for the next decade of American innovation.
One of the three centers, the Center for Human and Robot Co-Adaptation, will be led by the University of Texas at Austin. That center will focus on how people and robots can learn to work together more effectively, especially in settings where robots need to adapt to human behavior in real time. The work is expected to cover everything from manufacturing floors to home assistance and healthcare.
The other two centers will focus on different areas of advanced technology, though the NSF has not released full details on their specific research agendas yet. The agency says all three centers were chosen through a competitive review process and will involve partnerships with multiple universities and industry players.
The investment is part of a broader NSF push to speed up the transfer of lab discoveries into practical applications. The robotics center, in particular, is meant to address a growing gap between what robots can do in controlled settings and what they need to do in messy, unpredictable human environments. That gap has been a major hurdle for wider adoption of robotics in daily life.
University officials in Austin say the center will bring together engineers, computer scientists, and behavioral researchers. The goal is not just to build smarter machines, but to build systems that can read human cues, adjust their actions, and earn trust over time. Early projects are expected to include assistive robots for older adults and collaborative robots for small-scale manufacturing.
The NSF expects the centers to be fully operational within the next year, with the first round of research projects starting shortly after.
