Route 66 trolley tour blends history, art, and technology in Albuquerque

A new trolley tour in Albuquerque is giving visitors a fresh way to experience the legendary highway. The ride blends classic storytelling with modern technology, taking passengers past historic landmarks while also showcasing contemporary public art and digital overlays.

The tour runs along the city's stretch of Route 66, a corridor known for neon signs, vintage motels, and diners. But instead of just pointing out old buildings, the guides use augmented reality to show how the area looked decades ago. Riders can hold up a tablet or phone to see ghost signs and long-gone businesses layered over the current view. It is a mix of nostalgia and innovation that appeals to both history buffs and tech fans.

Local artists also get a spotlight. The trolley stops at several murals and sculptures that have gone up in recent years, turning the route into an outdoor gallery. Some pieces are interactive, with QR codes that trigger audio stories from the artists themselves.

Organizers say the goal is to make history feel alive, not stuck in a museum. By pairing old photos with new art and digital tools, the tour offers a layered look at how Albuquerque has changed along the Mother Road. Tickets are available for daily runs through the fall, with special evening trips planned for the holiday season.
