US SECTORS CALL: Information Technology Is On Sale

US SECTORS CALL: Information Technology Is On Sale

The S&P 500 closed Friday at 7,489.72, still hovering near the 7,500 mark that has defined its summer stall since mid-May. But beneath that flat surface, the market has been anything but quiet.

Last week brought another wave of turbulence, this time triggered by forced liquidation that hit several major positions. The shakeout pushed the Information Technology sector down hard enough that analysts are now calling it a genuine buying opportunity.

The numbers tell the story. Tech has underperformed the broader index for several weeks, with the gap widening after the liquidation event. For investors who have been waiting on the sidelines, the pullback has created entry points that were not available earlier in the year.

What makes this different from a typical dip is the cause. Forced selling creates artificial pressure that does not reflect underlying business fundamentals. When positions are unwound to meet margin calls or regulatory requirements, the price drop is mechanical, not fundamental. Once the selling stops, the recovery tends to be swift.

Earnings reports from major tech names have remained solid. Revenue growth is still there, margins are holding, and forward guidance has not been cut. The sector is trading at a discount to its historical average, which rarely lasts long.

The question now is timing. Some fund managers are already adding to their tech positions, betting that the forced selling has run its course. Others are waiting for a clearer signal that the bottom is in. Either way, the consensus is that tech is on sale, and the window may not stay open much longer.
