War shows that technology changes military arithmetic but does not abolish it

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has become a powerful case study in how modern technology is rewriting the rules of engagement. Drones, satellite imagery, and precision-guided munitions have allowed smaller or less-equipped forces to strike with an effectiveness that was unthinkable just a decade ago. Yet, as the fighting grinds on, a crucial lesson is emerging: technology changes the arithmetic of war, but it does not abolish it.

What this means in practice is that while a single drone can destroy a tank worth millions, the side that runs out of shells, fuel, or trained infantry still loses. The battlefield has become a brutal ledger where every piece of high-tech gear is offset by the need for basic supplies. A sophisticated electronic warfare system is useless if the soldiers operating it are exhausted or if the logistics convoy bringing its spare parts is ambushed.

The war has shown that innovation can temporarily shock an opponent and create windows of opportunity. But those windows close quickly as the enemy adapts. The fundamental equation of war, which weighs manpower, industrial output, and the will to fight, remains the deciding factor over the long haul. No app or algorithm can replace a steady supply of artillery ammunition or the resilience of a nation's population. In the end, technology is a powerful multiplier, but it is not a substitute for the hard, unglamorous work of building and sustaining a fighting force. The arithmetic is just harder to calculate now, but it still has to be done.
