The AI company Anthropic says it has found a new way to peek inside the "black box" of its language models, revealing how they arrive at specific answers. The research, which focuses on the company's Claude model, suggests that the AI does not simply regurgitate patterns but can, in some cases, follow a logical chain of thought. However, experts caution that the findings are limited and do not solve the broader mystery of AI reasoning.
Anthropic's senior editor Will Douglas Heaven explained that the team identified a method to trace the model's internal steps when solving math problems or generating text. By analyzing the activity of individual "neurons" within the neural network, they could see the model selecting relevant concepts and discarding irrelevant ones. For instance, when asked a question about a country's capital, the model appeared to first recall the country, then search for its capital, and finally produce the answer.
But Heaven stressed that this is not a complete map of the model's mind. The technique only works for simple, well-defined tasks. In more complex or creative scenarios, the model's reasoning remains opaque. the research does not address deeper concerns about bias, safety, or the potential for models to produce confident but incorrect answers. While Anthropic's discovery is a step toward transparency, it underscores how much remains unknown about the inner workings of advanced AI systems.
