The Del City Council has signed off on a multi-year contract to equip the local police department with a suite of new technology, including body cameras, tasers, and drone systems. The decision, made during a recent council meeting, marks a significant investment in modernizing the department's equipment.
Under the approved agreement, officers will receive updated body-worn cameras designed to improve evidence collection and transparency during interactions with the public. The contract also covers new conducted energy weapons, commonly known as tasers, which will replace older models. the department will acquire drone technology intended for use in search and rescue operations, traffic crash reconstruction, and tactical situations.
City officials say the new gear will help officers work more safely and efficiently. The contract is structured as a long-term lease, spreading the cost over several years to avoid a large upfront expense. While specific financial terms were not detailed in the meeting, council members emphasized that the investment was necessary to keep pace with modern policing standards.
The Del City Police Department has been using older equipment that was nearing the end of its service life. The new cameras and tasers are expected to be deployed within the coming months, following training for officers. The drone program will be phased in as operators complete certification requirements.
