The Department of Public Safety (DPS) has initiated a pilot program to evaluate the effectiveness of license plate reader (LPR) technology on campus. This innovative approach aims to bolster safety measures and enhance the overall security environment for students, faculty, and staff.
The LPR technology will allow law enforcement to monitor and analyze vehicle activity more efficiently, potentially aiding in the prevention of crime and the swift identification of suspicious vehicles. By capturing and processing license plate information, the system is designed to provide real-time alerts for vehicles that may be linked to criminal activity or are otherwise of interest.
As part of the pilot program, DPS will assess the impact of the technology on campus safety and its effectiveness in supporting law enforcement operations. The initiative reflects a commitment to leveraging advanced technology to create a safer campus community while maintaining respect for privacy and civil liberties. The results of this pilot will inform future decisions regarding the deployment of LPR technology on campus.
