Phil Ingrassia, president of the RV Dealers Association, argues that technology is not just an accessory for campers and hikers but is actively reshaping the entire outdoor recreation industry. In a recent commentary, Ingrassia highlighted how innovations once reserved for high-end gadgets are now standard in RVs and camping gear, changing how people plan, travel, and experience nature.
He points to the rise of smart RVs equipped with solar power management systems, automated leveling jacks, and remote climate control. These features allow users to monitor their vehicle's battery levels and tank capacities from a smartphone, reducing the stress of off-grid living. Ingrassia also notes that navigation apps and satellite connectivity have made remote destinations more accessible, allowing families to explore deeper into national forests without losing contact with the outside world.
However, Ingrassia cautions that the industry must balance convenience with the core appeal of the outdoors: disconnecting from daily stress. He warns against over-automation that might strip away the sense of adventure. The challenge for dealers and manufacturers, he says, is to integrate technology that enhances safety and comfort without turning the wilderness into a living room. As consumer expectations evolve, the RV sector must adapt to a future where digital tools and natural landscapes coexist, ensuring that innovation serves the journey rather than replacing it.
