CARTERVILLE, Ill. -- The surgical technology program at John A. Logan College has achieved a significant milestone. The school's Associate in Applied Science Degree in Surgical Technology has been officially accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, known as CAAHEP.
This recognition places the program among a select group of institutions that meet rigorous national standards for curriculum, faculty, and student outcomes. For students, this accreditation is a major advantage. Graduates from a CAAHEP-accredited program are eligible to sit for the national certification exam to become a Certified Surgical Technologist. This credential is often required or strongly preferred by hospitals and surgical centers when hiring.
The program is designed to train students for the operating room environment. Coursework covers sterile techniques, surgical procedures, and patient care. Students learn how to prepare operating rooms, arrange equipment, and assist surgeons during operations.
College officials say the accreditation process involved a detailed review of the program's resources and instruction. They believe the certification will help boost enrollment and better serve the local healthcare community by producing well-trained graduates ready to work in southern Illinois hospitals. The next step for the program is to continue meeting the standards required to maintain this accredited status.
