Major League Baseball is set to trial a new technology system aimed at challenging checked swing calls in the Class A Florida State League, beginning Tuesday. This innovative approach utilizes a Hawk-Eye system, allowing teams to contest a checked swing decision made by the umpire.
Under this new system, either the batting or defensive team can initiate a challenge if they believe a checked swing was incorrectly called. The technology will assess the swing angle, determining that any motion falling short of 45 degrees will be classified as a no swing.
This initiative marks a significant step towards incorporating technology into the game, enhancing the accuracy of umpire calls and potentially reducing disputes over checked swings. As MLB continues to explore ways to improve the game experience for players and fans alike, this experiment could pave the way for broader implementations of technology in baseball officiating. The outcome of this trial could influence future decisions regarding the use of technology in Major League Baseball.
