NJIT Unveils PureTrace Labs to Advance PFAS Detection Technology

In an exciting development for environmental science and technology, the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has launched PureTrace Labs, a startup focused on commercializing advanced detection technology for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). This initiative is a collaborative effort between NJIT and its subsidiary, the New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII), marking a significant step in addressing the growing concerns surrounding PFAS contamination.

The formal announcement took place on November 3, 2025, in Newark, New Jersey. The launch event featured key figures including PureTrace Labs CEO Cassie Hallberg, NJII President Michael Johnson, Professor and Chief Scientific Officer Hao Chen, and NJIT President Teik Lim. Together, they emphasized the importance of developing innovative solutions to tackle the environmental and health risks posed by PFAS, commonly known as "forever chemicals" due to their persistence in the environment.

PureTrace Labs aims to leverage cutting-edge research and technology to provide accurate and efficient detection methods for PFAS, which have been linked to various health issues. The startup represents a commitment to not only advancing scientific knowledge but also translating that knowledge into practical applications that can benefit communities and protect public health.
