Eastern has officially approved a new artificial intelligence minor, set to launch in the fall. The proposal for the minor was first introduced to the university on December 8, 2025, and received final approval from the Council on Academic Affairs on February 26, 2026. The interim assistant chair of the School of Technology confirmed the timeline, noting that the program is designed to meet growing student interest in AI and machine learning.
The minor will be open to students across all majors, offering a blend of foundational theory and practical application. Coursework is expected to cover topics such as data analysis, neural networks, natural language processing, and ethical considerations in AI. University officials said the program aims to prepare graduates for careers in fields where AI is becoming increasingly central, from healthcare to finance.
Faculty members within the School of Technology have been developing the curriculum for over a year, drawing on industry trends and feedback from local tech employers. The minor requires 18 credit hours, including a capstone project that allows students to work on real-world AI problems. Registration for the first cohort will open later this spring, with classes beginning in August.
