A growing number of western states are turning to artificial intelligence to catch wildfires in their earliest moments. The technology, developed by companies like Pano AI, uses high-resolution cameras mounted on towers and hillsides to scan vast stretches of forest and rangeland. When the system detects smoke or unusual heat patterns, it alerts fire agencies within minutes, often before a single 911 call comes in.
Last year alone, Pano AI's network identified 725 wildfires across the United States. That number highlights how quickly these systems can spot a blaze that might otherwise smolder unnoticed for hours. In many cases, the cameras catch fires that start far from roads or homes, where no one is around to report them.
Firefighters say the early warning is a game-changer. A fire that is caught in the first 10 minutes can often be contained with a small crew and a helicopter. Once it grows beyond an acre or two, the resources needed to stop it multiply fast. With fire seasons growing longer and more intense across the West, any head start helps.
The cameras are linked to AI software that filters out false alarms from dust, fog, or vehicle exhaust. Human analysts also review the footage before sending alerts. Several states, including California, Oregon, and Colorado, have already installed these systems in high-risk areas. The technology is not cheap, but officials argue it pays for itself by preventing the massive costs of fighting large fires.
